Privacy Policy
LoveHallie.org
is a website operated by the Love, Hallie Foundation (also, “Love, Hallie,”
“we,” “us” or “our”), a New York-based nonprofit organization that promotes
youth philanthropy, helping young people improve their communities and the
world. Love, Hallie
has reached more than 60 million people worldwide through media and
publications, special events, youth action campaigns, and this website: www.LoveHallie.org (also, “our Website” or
“our Site”).
Love,
Hallie respects the privacy of all our website visitors, whether children,
teenagers, parents, donors, or other supporters and contributors to our mission.
To demonstrate our concern, we have adopted the following Privacy Policy (or
“Policy”), which explains – in simple terms and an easy-to-follow
bulleted format – what information we may collect from our Website visitors
and how we handle such information. For simplicity, we may
conveniently refer to any or all of our visitors as “visitors,” “users,” or “you”
in certain parts of this Policy.
Special
Note to Parents: As a non-profit organization, our Website is not subject
to the requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Nonetheless, we take children’s privacy seriously and have adopted a number of
additional measures to comply with the spirit of COPPA and otherwise keep
parents aware of their children’s activities on our Website. These measures
are outlined in various parts of the Policy below, including in those sections
marked “Note to Parents.” If you have any questions or concerns, please
contact us using the contact information below:

1. What does
this Privacy Policy apply to, and who does it cover?
·
As mentioned
above, this Policy applies to information collected through the Love, Hallie
website located at www.lovehallie.org, specifically
information collected from children or teenagers seeking to become Hallie’s
Angels, supporters who make donations, and parents or other visitors to our
Site.
· Although this Policy does not generally
apply to information we collect through offline means (such as through an
offline Hallie’s Angel application, phone call from a member or donor, mail-in
donation form, or other offline correspondence), the practices set forth below (where
noted) also represent how we handle certain information we receive from our members
or supporters offline.
· This Policy does not apply to
third party websites to which we link or which link to our Site, such as those
of any business partner (e.g., Network for Good, Amazon, etc.), even if those
sites are performing important fulfillment services on our behalf. We are not
responsible for the content or practices of any third party site. We encourage
you to review the privacy policies of any third party sites before you provide
any personal information.
2. What types of
information do we collect on our Site and how do we use it?
The
information we may collect from our Website visitors will vary depending on the
person visiting, the reason for their visit, and the particular form or feature
they are using. The following is a list of scenarios of where we may collect
information, and for each scenario, a description of the types of information collected
and how the information may be used.
·
Hallie’s
Angels Applicant Information (“Registration”). This information is collected from
children or teenagers (preferably between the ages of 8 and 18) who are interested
in applying to become a Hallie’s Angel (i.e., an active participant or
contributor to our collective mission). The information requested for this online
application/registration may include personal contact information such as name,
mailing address, email address, and phone number, and certain demographic
information such as gender and date of birth. We may also ask applicants to
indicate their desired level of participation and involvement in Love, Hallie
(for example, whether they’d like to be a chapter leader and/or receive ongoing
communications from Love, Hallie). The contact information provided during
registration is used to determine whether the child or teenager qualifies as a
Hallie’s Angel and to mail qualified applicants the Hallie’s Angels toolkit on
how to get started. Contact information may also be used to periodically send
our members (via email or postal mail) news, events, and information about
Love, Hallie and/or other similar organizations or causes that motivate kids to
do good. The demographic information provided during registration allows us to
help segment our Hallie’s Angels into different age groups or chapters (and,
based on this information, identify other cities or groups of children who may
be interested in getting involved), screen for users under the age of 13 (see “Application
for users under 13” below), and possibly give annual birthday wishes to our
valued Hallie’s Angels.
o
Application/Registration
from users under 13: For applicants under the age of 13, we may also ask
for a parent’s contact information (such as parent’s name and email address)
during registration. This information is used to notify the child’s parent
(via email) of the child’s registration and interest in becoming a Hallie’s
Angel. The notice will contain a link to this privacy policy and may provide a
parent with instructions on how to confirm and/or update their child’s
registration information, or, if desired, opt out their child from the program
entirely. Parents can also contact us regarding their child’s application or
participation in Love, Hallie at any time by using the contact information
provided above. We will endeavor to honor any and all reasonable and authentic
requests from parents of children under the age of 13.
o
Note to
Parents regarding Love, Hallie membership: Love, Hallie strongly encourages
parents to be involved in their children’s Love, Hallie activities. Whether
children get involved in Love, Hallie as Angels, chapter leaders, or just
followers, it is important that young children understand the risks in organizing
or participating in social activities that may involve offline meetings or
group sessions. Unless accompanied by a familiar adult, children should never
invite, form Love, Hallie chapters or get together with people they or you do
not already know well and trust.
·
Donor
Information. This
information is collected from those who graciously support Love, Hallie
financially.
o
For offline
donations (i.e., those submitted via phone or mail-in envelope), we ask
– although do not require – donors to provide certain contact
information such as name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. This
information is used to thank our donors for their support, process their
contributions (including preparing and sending them tax receipts), keep them
updated on news and information about Love, Hallie and other similar charitable
causes, and periodically reach out to them for additional support.
o
Online
donation forms (which allow for identified or anonymous donations via
credit card) are handled by an independent third party company, Network for
Good, on our behalf. If you make a donation to Love, Hallie online (at www.NetworkforGood.com), Network for Good will share your name and email address
with us, unless you indicate otherwise under “Privacy Preferences” during the
donation checkout process. Any donor information provided to us by Network for
Good is used in the same manner described above. However, because this
information was collected on the Network for Good website, it is also subject
to the terms of the Network for Good privacy and security policy available at www.networkforgood.com.
·
Guest Book
Signings. Visitors
who choose to post a message on our online Guest Book are simply asked to
provide their first name, location (city and state), and the comment they’d
like to post. This information is used solely for purposes of displaying your
comment (along with your first name and where you’re from) on the Guest Book
portion of our Site, thereby enabling all those involved in the Love, Hallie
mission or just visiting our Site to easily share and publicize their
experiences and thoughts about Love, Hallie. No personal information (such as
your full name, mailing address, email address, or phone number) should be
posted on the Guest Book. We reserve the right to remove any postings we find
to be offensive, inappropriate, or unsafe.
·
Community
Features. We may
provide on our Website social or community-type features that allow users to
upload, and publicly share with other users, pictures, videos, artwork or other
similar media or content. In order to use these features and post such
content, you may first be required to register for Hallie’s Angel membership or
provide (as part of the same or a separate registration) certain information
about you or others to whom the content relates. These features (if
available) are provided for the purpose of enabling our members and supporters
to share the Love, Hallie mission with friends and family in a way that is easy,
fun, and member-driven.
o
Note to
Parents regarding Community Features: Please remember that these areas of
our Site must always be used with caution. Although we may take certain
measures to help protect those who use these features (for example, by
pre-screening content for appropriateness before posting or limiting the group
of people with whom users can share content), we cannot guarantee the privacy
of these areas and are not responsible for any content or information children or
teenagers post in these areas. We strongly encourage parents to be actively and
regularly involved in their children’s online activities and to use common
sense when using these areas of our Site. Children should never share personal
information with strangers or post content or information that either they or
you do not want others to see. Any information posted or shared in these
areas is done so at your own risk. For additional tips on how to help children
stay safe when using social networking features, we recommend you read the following
materials from the FTC website:
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/tech/tec14.shtm
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/kidzprivacy/kidz.htm
·
Inquiries and
Email Correspondence (Contact Us page). If a user writes to us using the contact email
addresses provided on our Site’s Contact Us page, your email address and any
information you provide in your email message will be used to respond to your
inquiries as appropriate, and may be stored for mandated tax or record-keeping
purposes.
·
Tell-a-Friend
or Forward-to-Friend Features. We invite our members and other Site visitors to spread the
message about Love, Hallie and our mission by using our Tell-a-Friend or
Forward-to-Friend features. These features (which may be available on our Site
or contained within an email message from Love, Hallie) may be configured to
automatically pull up a pre-populated message within your existing email client
(e.g., Outlook). If it is configured this way, all you would need to do to
send the message is input your friend’s email address and hit the Send button.
Alternatively, these features may be designed to bring up a web form asking you
to input your name and email address, and the names and email addresses of any
people to whom you’d like to forward the message. Regardless, the information you
fill in when using these features is not kept by Love, Hallie and is merely
used to forward the requested message, content, or communication.
·
Search
Amazon.com Box. The
Search Amazon.com box that appears on the left navigation bar of our Site is
provided as a convenience to help our users easily and quickly find products
sold on Amazon.com without having to first open the Amazon.com website in a
separate browser or window. When you type a keyword into this box, the search
term is automatically forwarded to Amazon and the results for your searched
term will appear in a separate window that opens to the Amazon.com site. We do
not collect or store the keywords you type into this search box. However, if a
search that originated on our Site results in a purchase at Amazon.com, Amazon
will return a small portion of the fee for the item purchased as a donation to
Love, Hallie.
Regardless
of the information being requested or the feature or service for which the information
is collected and used, we will adhere to the following three principles:
1. The information we request from you will
be limited to the amount of information we believe we need to administer or
provide you the requested activity or feature in the most efficient,
convenient, and user-friendly manner possible.
2. It is always your choice whether to
provide us your personal or demographic information. If you choose not to
provide us this information when requested, you may not be able to partake in
certain activities, such as Hallie’s Angel membership. To simply browse our
Site, you do not need to give us any personal or demographic information.
3. In addition to the descriptions
above, the information you provide us will always be used in a manner that
furthers (or attempts to further) the Love, Hallie mission, whether that means working
to expand our membership or base of financial support, communicating with members
on the progress of their specific projects or about Love, Hallie in general, and
other important causes, or customizing the content and layout of our Website so
we can continue to please and engage our members and supporters so they keep
coming back for more.
3. Do we collect any information
automatically through cookies or other web technologies?
·
Like many other
sites on the Internet today, we may use a variety of standard web technologies
to automatically collect certain information about your visit to our Site and,
in return, provide you a more pleasant, convenient, and personalized Website
experience. Examples of the types of technologies we may use and how we use
them are provided below.
o
Cookies
– these are small text files that we may store on your computer to
remember certain things about your visit to our Site and/or your computer
system. For example, cookies might remember the fact that you previously
visited our Site and the pages and images you viewed or clicked on during that
visit. Cookies might also be used to capture your computer’s Internet Protocol
(IP) Address (assigned by your Internet Service Provider), which may allow us
to determine your general geographic location (e.g., New York City). Upon subsequent
visits to our Site, we may retrieve this cookie information from your computer
and use it to automatically display information that we think may be of interest
to you. A cookie might also be used to help us screen for users under the age
of 13 and route them to the appropriate registration form. We do not use
cookies to collect personal information about you, although we may link cookie information
to personal information collected from you by other means (such as through the
Hallie’s Angel application form – See Section 2 above).
Most
common web browsers today, such as Firefox and Internet Explorer, allow you to
modify your settings to block cookies entirely, alert you every time they are
being sent, or allow their use by only those websites you select. You can also
delete cookies that are currently stored on your computer’s hard drive. To
do this within Firefox or Internet Explorer, go to Tools, then Options or
Internet Options, and then choose the Privacy tab to make your
selections. If you choose to disable cookies, certain features and
services on our Sites may not be available to you or work properly.
o
Web Logs or
Log Files – these are files stored on our web server (or that of our
service provider) that record Website activity and gather non-identifiable
statistics about your visit to our Site. The information collected through log
files may include (among other things): (i) the type of browser and operating
system you use; (ii) your computer’s IP address; and, (iii) other information
about your online session (e.g., date and time of your visit, URL you came from
to get to our Site, etc.). In addition to using this information to better
understand how our Site is used and to improve its functionality, we may use
log file information such as your computer’s IP address (together with personal
information if necessary) to troubleshoot technical problems, help ensure the
security of our Website, or prohibit or restrict access to our Site or online
activities by certain users.
4. Do we disclose your information to other
companies?
·
Love, Hallie may
allow outside companies to access your information, including personal and
demographic information, under the following circumstances:
o Agents and Contractors. Love,
Hallie may hire agents or service providers to help us run or host this
Website, administer online registrations, or perform other services related to
the internal operation of our Website. When performing these services on our
behalf, these companies may be given access to the information they need to perform
the specific tasks they’ve been hired to do. These companies are strictly prohibited
from using your information for any other purpose, and have agreed to keep your
information confidential and secure.
o
Successors
and Assigns. In the event of a merger, acquisition, reorganization,
bankruptcy, or other similar event involving Love, Hallie, our member and donor
information may be transferred to Love, Hallie's successor or assign.
o
Legal Disclosures.
Love, Hallie may disclose information in the good faith belief we are required
to do so by law or such disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with legal
processes, enforce contract terms, respond to or resolve any claims (including
member complaints), or otherwise protect the safety or rights (including
intellectual property rights) of Love, Hallie, our members and supporters, or
the general public.
5. How can you access
and modify the information we’ve stored about you, and what choices do you have
with respect to the use of your information?
·
Access and
Modification. If you registered online to become a Hallie’s Angel, you can
always access or edit your account information by clicking on the Update
Profile link provided at the top of our Website. You will be asked to provide
the email address you used when you registered, and, if it matches with the
email address we have on file, our system will automatically email you a link
that provides you direct access to your account. Parents can use this same
process to access and update their child’s account information. For all other
users (including donors), please contact us using the contact information
provided at the top of this Policy to update or request the deletion of your
information from our records. You may be required to verify your identity with
the proper email address, phone number, or other contact information before we can
delete or make changes to your account.
·
Opting-out.
If you would like to opt-out from receiving news and information from Love,
Hallie (whether they come by email or postal mail), you can do this by:
1.
Opting out at
the time of registration;
2.
Accessing your
account via the Update Profile process and changing your selected preference to
receive communications; or,
3.
Simply follow the
unsubscribe process or directions provided in the footer of each email message
we send you.
6. How do we protect your information?
· Security Measures. Love,
Hallie takes a number of reasonable measures, in light of the generally
non-sensitive information in our possession, to protect the security of your information.
These measures include, but are not necessarily limited to, storing your
information in secure operating environments that are only accessible to
authorized and authenticated Love, Hallie personnel or agents and on a strict
need-to-know basis.
7.
What are you agreeing to when you use our Website, and how are you notified of
changes to this Privacy Policy?
·
Acceptance of
this Policy. By using our Website, you acknowledge you have read and agree
to the practices and terms set forth in this Privacy Policy. If you do not
agree with the practices set forth in this Policy, please do not use our Site.
· Residents outside the United
States. This Website is intended primarily for users residing within the
United States. If you are a user from outside the U.S., please note that any
information you provide us through this Site may be collected, stored, and
processed by Love, Hallie within the U.S. By using our Site, you agree to the
transfer, use, and disclosure of your information as set forth in this Policy.
· Notification of Changes. We
reserve the right to make changes to this Privacy Policy at any time. If we
make any changes, we will update the effective date of the Policy or post the
date the most recent updates or revisions were made. Please check back periodically
to ensure you are aware of these changes. Your failure to object or your
continued use of our Site after these changes are posted will signify your
acceptance of the revised Policy.
o
Material
Changes. If we make a material change to this Privacy Policy (for example,
we want to use your information in ways not previously disclosed in this Policy
or that could not be reasonably expected by you), we will notify you by posting
a prominent notice about the change on our Sites or in this Privacy Policy,
and, if necessary or appropriate, provide you with certain choices before any
such change takes effect. We may also contact parents regarding any such
changes that affect children under the age of 13.
